Updating Polished Tickles

Hello dear readers,

I have already advised on Facebook that I will be taking a break from blogging but I will do so here too.

I have a very scary long list of things that need to be updated on Polished Tickles and so I will be focusing on that until month end.

I have asked a few people to do guest posts for the blog in my absence so that there is still some sort of action on the blog hehe.

In regards to the updates, I plan on creating a back up of posts in case of a nail disaster. I also want to reswatch all my polishes and work through my Nail Art to do list. As well as finish my “Collection” page.

Believe it or not but there is actually so much behind the scenes of being a nail art blogger & collector.

BannerI will still respond to comments & queries.

Anyhoo

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

A “Not About Nail Polish” Post

Hehe I love the title of this post, it comes from the fact that my boyfriend says all I ever talk about is Nail Polish, well I have news for you Mr! This post is NOT about nail polish ūüėõ & was inspired by my pen pal Lilly from the USA(Happy Independence Day)!

She was saying that while she was going through my blog she noticed that there isn’t a whole lot about me as a person and that blog readers sometimes like to “know” the blogger behind the posts. I do have a personal blog for family and friends but its a little more uncensored than what is deemed professional and so I never put it out there for the public to read.

So to answer her wishes I give you some info about me ūüôā (She requested most of this info from me.)

  1. I am an Aquarian, as are my mother & grandmother.
  2. I was born in Johannesburg but raised in Cape Town (South Africa). I still have a very subtle “Jozi Accent” but that’s only when I use certain words.
  3. I am currently 22, some days I feel older lol.
  4. Both my parents live in the UK with their respective partners. My Father and Second Mom (I prefer that term rather than Step Mom, step moms are usually portrayed as Evil, she is not!) moved when I was 13 and my mother moved to the UK when I was 17. ¬†I have basically taken care of myself since then. I lived with my brother’s father for a little while before I had to move out and really take care of myself.
  5. I have lived on my own since I was 19, worked to pay rent and bills ect.
  6. I love writing! I have pen pal’s in USA, Australia, Paris & Poland.
  7. I collect post cards. I am a member of the Postcrossing Project and I have lost count of the amount of postcards I own.
  8. I am scared of Spiders & Needles… And Driving on big roads.
  9. I have 2 tattoo’s (Obviously not scared of those needles!)
  10. I love Red Wine… Like Love it! Bitter is better!
  11. If I had to choose 1 type of food to eat for the rest of my life it would be Sushi… I eat it regularly (My Bank Account can vouch for that hahaha)
  12. I have very eclectic taste in music and I am addicted to Glee.
  13. My Weirdest playlist would have to be Coco Rosie… Google them!
  14. I have a weird obsession with Zombies, I love all zombie Fiction/movies/series… (I have an apocalypse plan ūüėÄ hehe like I said, Weird!)
  15. My all time favorite game is The Sims. I started playing it as a child and never stopped. I usually only get to play it on Sundays but then I play for 8hrs straight.
  16. My boyfriend and I have been dating for 5 years on the 25th of October. He is my best friend and I love that we can be weird together without getting shy.
  17. I also have a fixation on owning a Sphynx Cat. I really really really want one. I think they are the cutest animals on the planet!
  18. I love reading those corny romance novels, my favorite author is “Katie Fforde“. I have a collection of almost all her books.
  19. I love giving my opinion, so I do online surveys and earn pretty cool vouchers and sometimes even earn $$$
  20. Last Fact is: I have a reality addiction, I love reality shows and yes I am a Kardashian fan hehe.

All about the Colours

While I was doing a post last week I did a bit of research into the meaning’s of colours. It is actually very interesting and so I have decided that in this post I will do a “What colour’s to wear & when” post ūüôā I used “Color Matters” as my source along with Google.

I found a really cool post by “Nails Beautiqued” about what your nail polish say’s about you. And this website all about Colour & Empowerment.

Red Nail Polish.

Red Swatches

Red Swatches

Red is the colour most associated with courage. It is also the colour associated with Love and Passion.

Red is the colour you wear if you want to attract attention. As I have said in a previous post, wearing red nail polish is going to draw attention to your hands. Its an eye catcher so if it is your intention to get your hands noticed, red is the way to go. Lots of woman don’t think red polish suits them. Its a very tricky colour as you need to match the shade to your skintone. Marie Claire¬†explained the different hues that will match your skin tone.

So if you want to avoid attention to your hands do not wear red polish!

The best time to wear Red polish is if you want to show off a ring or if you are doing a presentation and will be using your hands.

Also Red’s Complementary Colour is Green. Those Colour’s together generally give off a “Festive” vibe. So you can use them together to create Xmas themed Nail Art.

Orange Nail Polish.

Orange Swatches

Orange Swatches

The colour Orange is most commonly associated with Humor and entertainment. It is a warm vibrant colour, and is also considered a very visible colour, that’s why “Lifebuoy’s” and life boats are Orange, they can be spotted easily in the ocean.¬†Orange also gives the Idea of a being healthy.

So when should you wear Orange Nail Polish? Well if you are spending the day pool side you can enhance your hands by wearing it as it is complimented by the blue water. Also when your mood is low or you are feeling sick, give your nails a healthy boost of colour that insinuates good health and hopefully you will feel better too.

Orange is complimented by blue so why not try those colours next?

Yellow Nail Polish.

Yellow Swatches

Yellow Swatches

The colour yellow is commonly associated with gold, sunshine, reason, optimism and pleasure, but also with envy, jealousy and betrayal.

Yellow Nail polish makes me think of Summer. It makes your summer tan look fabulous. It was a big trend in 2012 but among the articles I read on it, it’s not a popular colour if its on its own. Most people say it reminds them of illness rather than fashion.

Yellow also gives off a creative energy so even if you don’t want to wear it on your nails you can surround yourself with it to feel more creative.¬†Use it around you to help keep a clear your mind, and improve memory and decision making.

If you are going to be wearing yellow polish, add a pop of bight pink or purple on your tips or stick to a pastel yellow. Wear yellow to present a cheery, uplifting effect.

Yellow is complemented by Violet, so next time you do a yellow mani why not add a splash of Violet.

Green Nail Polish.

Green Swatches

Green Swatches

Green is the colour most commonly associated with nature and the environmental movement, Money, spring, hope and envy.

I generally only wear Green Nail Polish on St. Patrick’s Day. Green either gives off an energy of luck or rebirth, this being due to spring time.¬†Green is the colour of nature, fertility, life. Grass green is the most restful colour. It symbolizes self-respect and well being.

When to wear green polish? When you want to overcome a sense of lost ambition. Or when you want to feel safe and comfortable. You can also wear Green polish to weddings or a date night as it is linked to unconditional Love.

Green is complimented by Red, but I also think it is stunning if paired with gold polish.

Blue Nail Polish.

Blue Swatches

Blue Swatches

Blue is the favorite colour of most people. (This must be true because I have more blue polish than anything else) It’s nature’s colour for water and sky. It is cold, wet, and slow as compared to red’s warmth, fire, and intensity.

Blue has more complex and contradictory meanings than any other colour.¬†Most blues convey a sense of trust, loyalty, cleanliness, and understanding. But some give off a feeling of sadness and depresiion, Hence a “Blue Monday”.

When to wear Blue Nail Polish? If you have an interview, wearing navy blue or dark blue polish gives of a professional energy.

Also on your wedding day, consider having your nails blue as your “something Blue”

Purple Nail Polish.

Purple Swatches

Purple Swatches

Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery, as well as royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal colour.

Purples have been used in the care of mental or nervous disorders because they have shown to help balance the mind and transform obsessions and fears.

When to wear purple nail polish? Wear purple when you want to encourage fantasy, mystery and imagination or when you are in mourning. Also when you want to feel balanced and calm.

Brown/Beige Nail Polish.

Brown & Beige Swatches

Brown & Beige Swatches

People who prefer brown are often conventional and orderly. The negative meaning of brown can be a repressed personality or a lazy person. Brown is the colour of the earth and is associated with the material side of life.

When to wear brown polish?¬†Put some brown in your life when you want¬†a solid wholesome feeling or¬†to blend with the background (That’s why we love Neutral Nails). To feel a connection with natural earth and the stability this brings.¬†Warm browns can be worn to exhibit a ‘down to earth’ feeling. Basically you wear Brown/Beige when you do not want to make an impression or statement.

Black Nail Polish.

Black Swatches

Black Swatches

Black is the colour most commonly associated with elegance in Europe and the United States, followed by silver, gold, and white.

Black nail polish, has mostly been used in the goth culture, it was mainly a goth thing, nowadays this trend is changing and just about everyone is using black nail polish so its no longer just a goth thing, it has become a trend. Black nail polish accentuates skin colour and makes you stand out, it can also be quite empowering, and give one a don’t mess with me look!

Black polish is like the “LBD” of polish. Its a staple to any “Fashionista” as it is considered a Chic look and goes with every outfit!

Gray Nail Polish.

Grey Swatches

Gray Swatches

Gray falls into the category of black but I feel it’s a whole category on its own. When researching Gray words such as Conformity, Boredom, lack of emotion & Modesty come up regularly! That’s just the colour though. In the Nail Polish world Gray is a very appealing colour (well I like it ;p) and its popping up more and more in various brands collections.

Its the Neutral for Black & White. Gray looks fabulous on its own as well as looking stunning with shocking Neon’s!¬†Gray can have a cooling effect when placed next to other more vibrant colors. It has a stabilizing effect, making vibrant colors stand out while muting their vibration.

It is a very easy going colour.

When to wear Gray Polish? Wear it when you are wearing a bright outfit or to a job interview!

White Nail Polish.

Whit Swatches

White Swatches

White is the colour of purity. White is the colour most associated with cleanliness.

It is the latest Nail Polish colour on the runways for spring 2013. And many Celebs are sporting it too.

I personally feel like it makes my nails look longer than they really are, but also broader.

When to wear white Nail Polish? Wear white to give off a pure, wholesome impression or you want to look neat and tidy.

Pink Nail Polish.

Pink Swatches

Pink Swatches

In almost every culture, one stereotype emerges: pink is associated with girls! I saw a post that a man had written about what he thinks of woman that wear pink polish… He said ” Pink nail polish on a woman means she is easy” Um… I beg to differ.

Pink is the colour of universal love. Pink is a quiet colour. Beauty Lovers favor pink. Pink is also the colour that symbolizes Breast Cancer Support.

When to wear pink? Wear pink when you want to present yourself as a peaceful, calm person who is not threatening. The softer shades are very feminine and darker shades will alleviate feelings of friction. Also if you feel like being a little more girly than usual!

Metallic Nail Polish.

Metallic Swatches

Metallic Swatches

Gold is the symbol of good health. People who favor the colour gold are optimistic. Optimistic and positive, gold adds richness and warmth to everything with which it is associated. It illuminates and enhances other things around it.

The colour silver has a feminine energy.  It is associated with prestige and wealth. This color is very versatile, being shiny, modern and hi-tech on one hand and alluring, sparkling and elegant on the other.

When to wear Gold Polish? Wearing gold in everyday life increases personal power, and promotes courage, confidence and willpower.

When to wear Silver Polish? Silver Polish is appropriate for everyday wear on the job or at school. When you do go out, it adds a special touch that complements your jewelry and outfit. Silver nail polish will also highlight your hands, and show off your skin. It can look fabulous with any skin tone. If you have pale skin, consider a light silver. Those with darker skin can wear gunmetal shades.

That’s what I have interpreted from the hours of reading I did for this post.

I would really really love any extra input. How do colours make you feel? Please remember every person is affected by colours differently. This is a very generalized post.

I hope this helps you decide on polishes!

Wacky Wishlists

So as a Nail Artist I am always looking to grow my polish collection and so I have a wishlist of polishes I want and every month I tick a few off.

But some of the things on my wishlist are not Nail Polish or even closely related to nail polish but when applying a creative mind it will make sense.

For me the weirdest thing on my wishlist is Craft Scissors. Yes scissors, but they have patterned blades. Let me explain.

I use scotch tape as a type of stencil and if I had scissors that had different blades I would be able to cut out some beautiful patterns and use them as stencils to make funky nail art.

Craft Scissors

Craft Scissors

I have been meaning to buy some but never find a set that has good patterns for a good price.

What is the wackiest thing on your wishlist?

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

I will be swatching & reviewing the Tip Top polishes this weekend. (Its been a crazy busy week at work)

A Beginners Guide to Nail Art & Blogging

Hello Hello ūüôā

pizap.com13697495256401

So when I first got into this whole fabulous world of nail art I was slightly clueless, I searched high and low for info on how to get started and the only way I got it was by asking various established artists questions.

So I have decided that I will make a post with everything you need to know when starting out.

Firstly before you buy your polishes and embellishments you will need the following:

  • ¬†A Camera– This is what you will capture your creations with. Its important that you have a camera that has a great zoom & “macro” function. This function helps keep your picture clear when taking extreme close ups, which you will do 99% of the time. Some of the artists are known to have built their own light boxes, this helps illuminate your hand so you capture the best quality photo’s, I still need to do this. I currently just rely on natural light or a lamp.
  • The¬†Name-¬†¬†Its really important to come up with a quirky little name for your blog. I spent about 3 days thinking of a name, I would come up with something really cute then Google it to make sure it wasn’t taken, if it was I would go back to the drawing board and try again. Its really important that it be original as people generally don’t like copy cats and as you will see when trying to come up with one, its rather difficult but not impossible! I stared at my hands for hours before realizing that fingers tickle people and tickles make people laugh, And that’s how “Polished Tickles” was born… See ūüôā just be creative
  • A Website/Blog/Facebook ect– This is where you will upload your creations and where people who have interest in your work can follow you and stay in contact with you. If you are fortunate enough to be able to go all out on a custom website or blog from day one that’s a bonus but most people start off with a “Blogger” or “WordPress” or what ever host site you prefer and work their way up to a private domain.
  • Making it “You”¬†– Once you have the first 2 items you will need to think about the image you want to put out into the world. This being the artwork of your blog, your Logo or header and image branding. Now remember this can change whenever, brands get makeovers all the time so I would advise this, pick a colour scheme of about 3 or 4 colours, a font and then you are all set to start. If you are not a photoshop wiz don’t worry, you can do the most beautiful things with just an edited photo. I use PiZap to brand all my pictures with my blog name (Just to prevent theft and also if the picture ever ventures from your blog that you get credit where due) There are also a million and 1 tutorials on how to create your own graphics.

I know what you are thinking… All this and I¬†haven’t¬†even painted my nails yet¬†Don’t worry once you have all this set up you don’t have to do it again ūüôā

  • Supplies-¬†So every Nail Artist needs nail polish, that’s a given, but many other things are needed too. You can build up your collection of supplies over time, there is no rush to own every bottle of polish and every type of glitter/stud/fimo ect. Start small, if you are inexperienced on even the simplest of techniques trying to buy everything will overwhelm you.

For starters get these few things and go from there:

  1. – Acrylic Paint (Always comes in handy)
  2. – Nail Art Brushes
  3. – Make Up Sponges
  4. – Various Glitter’s & Rhinestones
  5. – Nail Polish remover & Cotton Balls
  6. – And any other item you feel you must just have.
  • Suppliers-¬†So some things you will see you cant get at your local beauty supplies store and you may need to order them online. My advise from previous experience is this and always this… EBAY = never arriving parcels… Not always but often enough to put me off shopping there with my hard earned rands (Converted to Dollars = very little) and so I would advise using the “Born Pretty Store” as they offer free shipping and they have great flash sales too. If you don’t feel comfortable shopping online there is also what I refer to as “China Town Hunting”, there are stores at your local China Town that will have some fantastic Nail Art goodies if you look properly! I have seen some great stamping plates and glitter/caviar packs going for under R10.00, so go take a look ūüôā
  • Finally painting your nails-¬†Rule number 1: Be neat (I’m guilty of being a messy painter.. And a lazy cleaner-upper) if you get some polish on your cuticles or around the nail use an earbud/que-tip or paint brush dipped in Nail Polish Remover to clean it up. Rule number 2: Make sure all your nails are the same length, we all have had that moment when doing something or other we chip or break a nail, if its not too bad file it down and then shape all your other nails to the same length, if you break it really bad I suggest some recovery off time where you don’t post swatches or artwork until you have healed up again. Rule number 3: Do NOT be your worst critic! I am yet again guilty of this! Just because you are not happy with what you have painted doesn’t mean everybody else will hate it. Post it anyway!
  • Practice, Practice, Practice-¬†The only way you get professional looking nails is to practice as much as possible. All those images you see online of perfect nails took tons of practice to get perfect! I keep a book that I call my “Nail Art Bible” in it I stick pictures of inspiration from other artists, I sketch idea’s I want to put on my nails and yes I even have a section that I use for practice. I am the worlds worst “stamper” I cannot get it right but I use my book to practice and one day when I get it right I will write a post about it.
  • Nail Care-¬†Practicing Nail Art even if its once a day puts strain on your nails as nail polish and removers are filled with Chemicals. So take care of your canvas, invest in cuticle & matrix oils and creams. I personally have a massive care routine I follow which includes various diet choices and supplements to help keep my nails (and body) healthy. So you should do so too!
  • Learning & Growing-¬†I suggest to start out with go watch YouTube Video’s and research Tutorials that will help you practice and refine your skills, but if you do so make sure you credit your “Guru” let them know you attempted their tutorial, you never know you could find a fan in them. Plus its a huge honor to be recognized for your hard work, someday you will see ūüôā
  • Follower’s & Fans-¬†When you start your biggest fans will be your friends and family, make sure you treat them by painting their nails, it gets your practice up & and a great way to advertise for free, just make sure you get them to “Name Drop”. Also when blogging, the way people find you is by how and what you tag your posts with. I generally tag with the Technique/polish brand/polish colour & name and then any other relevant tag. Obviously you wont tag your nail art with say “Men’s DIY” ect because that’s not your target market. Rather use tags such as “Nail Art” “Girly” ect. Don’t get discouraged by the amount of followers you have in the beginning everyone starts at the bottom. I found that as soon as I had a Giveaway on my Facebook Page my followers increased a great deal. If you are not in a position to host a giveaway don’t worry I had my first one when I celebrated blogging about Nail Art for a Year.

I truly hope this post has helped answer many questions. I am more than happy to help you if you have any queries please feel free to contact me.

All the Best and Good Luck
